THE OSO PROGRAM
The Oso Program is a structured four-level system designed to guide surfers through the right steps at the right time. Each level builds intentionally on the last, creating a clear understanding of where you are in your development and what the next step should be. This thoughtful progression ensures steady growth, deeper skill awareness, and long-term advancement in your surfing.
level 1
Level One lays the foundation, blending knowledge and skill in equal measure. This stage builds a clear understanding of what we’re aiming to accomplish in the surf — from knowing the equipment we ride to reading the ocean, surf zone, wave characteristics, and prioritizing safety. On the skills side, we focus on proper paddling technique, effective positioning, selecting the right waves, and learning to trim smoothly down the line with control and awareness.
LEVEL 2
Level Two builds directly on the foundation of Level One, expanding your understanding of wave knowledge and helping you recognize key features and sections of the wave. We refine positioning and begin confidently catching waves both frontside and backside. Skill development focuses on generating speed, moving intentionally from top to bottom of the wave, and exploring different positions on the face — while beginning to identify and attempt maneuvers such as the cutback.
LEVEL 3
Level Three builds on the skills and awareness developed in Level Two as surfers grow more confident in bigger, more powerful surf. At this stage, we focus on changing the direction of the board with control and intention, executing flatter maneuvers such as cutbacks and carves on both toeside and heelside. We also begin using the paddle more intentionally to enhance maneuvers — improving balance, power, and flow through turns. With stronger wave recognition, surfers anticipate sections and actively explore what each wave offers, linking maneuvers together with greater confidence and purpose.
LEVEL 4
Level Four is the equivalent of a black belt — where advanced surfers refine and master the skills they’ve built along the way. At this stage, you’re highly proficient and comfortable in bigger surf and a variety of breaks, able to generate speed in smaller waves and execute strong, controlled maneuvers in more powerful conditions. Surfers begin exploring more vertical angles, attacking critical sections with confidence, and navigating the lineup with awareness, composure, and safety.
